In future, Crime does not pay because you can be identified by your DNA

Updated 01:58 PM Sep 14, 2012
LONDON – Police could one day build mugshots using DNA from crime scenes, experts have claimed after identifying five genes that govern facial features such as nose shape.
A new study has identified how five different sections of the genetic code help guide the development of different facial characteristics in each individual.
Researchers from the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and Australia used MRI scans and portrait photographs to map out different facial features common among people of European ancestry.
They then analysed the genes of 10,000 people across the five countries to look for common genetic variants which were linked to different facial traits.
Five particular genes were identified for their involvement in certain features.
Three of those had previously been linked to the risk of facial defects, including two involved in cleft lip and palate, and one related to a minor disfigurement where the top of the nose and distance between the eyes is unusually broad.
Two genes never before linked to facial development were also highlighted, including one now thought to play a role in shaping the midface and another involved in the patterning of facial tissue.
Further research into the genes that determine how we look could help police produce “mugshots” based on DNA samples collected at crime scenes, the researchers suggested.
DNA traits have already enabled scientists to accurately predict traits like people’s hair and eye colour, they wrote in the Public Library of Science Genetics journal.
Prof Manfred Keyser from the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, Holland, who led the study, said: “These are exciting first results that mark the beginning of the genetic understanding of human facial morphology.
“Perhaps sometime it will be possible to draw a phantom portrait of a person solely from his or her DNA left behind, which provides interesting applications such as in forensics. We already can predict from DNA certain eye and hair colours with quite high accuracies,” he said. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

The systematic Local PMET Job Displacement by FTs if not rectified(100% u-turn not whitewashing) will cause PAP downfall

Published by The Online Citizen on September 17, 2012
On 25 June 2012, Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong posted a message on his Facebook.

This message suggested a panel of economists be set up to look into the issue of whether inflow of skilled immigrants led to job creation or job displacements.
This generated considerable interest based on replies. One reply described how the inflow of foreigners into local Professionals, Managerial, Executive & Technical (PMET) positions had led to the banking sector hiring people of all nationalities & origins except for homegrown Singapore citizens.
Another reply was itself a question. It asked the ESM whether the issue of local PMET displacement had been considered before PMET immigration was expanded.
During the 14 years from 1997 to 2011, the ESM, as Prime Minister & Senior Minister actively encouraged foreigners to take up PMET positions at all functions, levels & sectors. He described them as foreign talents (FTs).
Throughout this period, the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) government rejected any attempts to slow down the inflow of immigrant PMETs. It also rejected requests for greater clarification of the FT policy.
The ESM declared Singapore had a shortage of talent & expected existing citizens to accept his words without further question. However the continuous immigration flow meant this issue could not be ignored.
To understand the ESM silence, I believed this was due to the diverse nature of FT immigration critics. They could be divided into inner & outer categories. The inner critics consisted of those who were linked to the PAP government. The outer critics were ordinary citizens.
While immigration PMETs increased significantly, the PAP government also permitted more general foreign workers (FWs). The government plan was that once the immigration PMETs had created more economic value, there would less demand for FWs & they would return home.
Unfortunately, the FW influx caused the economy to become addicted to cheap labour. Both categories of critics agreed on the reliance on FWs implied the FT policy was not achieving its economic value added objectives.
After the 1991 General Election(GE), the ESM thought younger voters were interested in a 2-party political system & ending PAP dominance. Therefore he hoped PMET immigration would create a global hub which would bring in not just economic value but also enhance PAP prestige. This would in turn decrease support for a 2 party political system.
When both categories of critics were unhappy with immigration, the PAP government avoided FT policy discussion. The ESM feared any highlighting of policy drawbacks would adversely affect the PAP’s political prestige.
The difference between the inner & outer critics was on the question of local PMET displacement. While the outer critics argued this was increasingly common, the inner critics in good positions generally did not see it as a problem.
The inner critics were able to get the PAP government to listen to them more often than their outer counterparts. As a result when the ESM responded to immigration queries, he kept talking about FWs.
Since the inner critics were mainly concerned with the FW influx, therefore, the ESM replies was actually a response mainly to the inner critics. The outer critics were seen by the PAP Government as irrelevant.
The ESM Facebook posting probably suggested that PAP government did not think PMET displacement was an issue until after the 2011 GE. One reason was the lack of definite & irrefutable evidence. The relevant information used by the outer critics included:
A1) Anecdotal examples such as more former local senior PMETs driving taxis, indicating underemployment due to age discrimination.
A2) Birth decreases occurring simultaneously with PMET immigration increase. Since the proportion of PMETs among younger generation of biological producing age was higher than the older generation, this suggested younger local PMETs were facing displacement & continuously postponing childbirth.
A3)Young local PMETs becoming entrepreneurs when their relatively well-paid job positions were being taken up by immigrants. These local young people were probably forced to set up their own business due to employer & government preference for foreigners.
A4)Increase in emigrating citizens. The outer critics argued the FT influx forced homegrown citizens to become FTs elsewhere.
Unfortunately, as the PAP Government was already strongly biased in favour of massive PMET immigration, it interpreted the facts & figures in a different manner. The pro-PAP mainstream media tried to explain the situation as:
B1)Senior local PMETs-turned-taxi drivers were already reaching the retirement age. Therefore, employing organizations could not be expected to hire such persons.
B2)Decrease in births was due to the changing lifestyle choices of younger PMET women. They voluntarily postponed having children earlier due to other interests.
B3)The younger generation found normal PMET jobs boring. Entrepreneurship was more exciting & satisfying
B4)More homegrown citizens emigrated because they desired to have foreign experiences.
While these explanations had some basis, they contained glaring faults.
C1)Many of the senior local PMETs-turned taxi drivers were under 55 years old & not yet reached the  statutory retirement age of 62 years old.
C2)Lifestyle explanations were based on inaccurate assumptions that young women earned very good incomes  & males were not important in planned parenthood.
C3)Entrepreneurship in Singapore without an influential sponsor could mean near-certain bankruptcy. Massive immigration meant little hope for a failed entrepreneur to regain suitable employment. Therefore the excitement provided little real satisfaction.
C4)Working overseas meant having to overcome many significant socio-economic & government obstacles elsewhere. No other nation or region had an ESM-style ultra-liberal & ultra-promotional immigration policy
The best way to explain the perception gap between the PAP Government & the outer critics was that displacement was a gradual process. It took 14 years for displaced local PMETs to reach a critical mass.
In July 2012, the Government National Population & Talent Division (NPTD) released a population issues paper & welcomed suggestions.
The FT policy outer critics generally proposed the following:
  • Significant reduction in the granting of new PMET P, Q & S work passes.
  • A more detailed clarification on the type of foreign PMETs needed in Singapore.
  • Quotas & levies to be imposed on the hiring of middle & higher P & Q Pass Employment Pass holders.
  • Further increases in salary classifications for PQS holders. This would reduce the probability of foreign PMETs working as a higher form of cheap labour.
Some critics were skeptical of government consultation, pointing out that previous sessions over the years had little effect on policy-making.
After the 2011GE, the PAP government acknowledged immigration was a source of unhappiness but refused to significantly change the FT policy.
As for the ESM who spent 14 years on attracting what he termed as skilled immigrants, explaining the displacement effect to him might be meaningless.
PMET (Professionals, Managers, Executives & Technicians) job displacement has no specific statistics as it does not exist in the world of the ruling PAP (People’s Action Party) Government. However, it is felt significantly.

This policy was to bring in foreigners with some relevant background to take up PMET positions at all functions, levels & sectors. He described these foreign PMETs as foreign talents (FTs).
At a Parliamentary Query on 19 Feb 1998, PAP Member for Nee Soon Central Mr Ong Ah Heng asked if foreign talents were hired simply because they were cheaper. (Parliamentary Debates Official Report Call Number RSING 328.5957 SIN Volume 68, 14 Jan 1998 to 12 March 1998, Columns 185). In later years, PAP critics who were unaware of this query would agree with Mr Ong.
In Sep 1998, the current foreign PMET workpass system was implemented. Below were the minimum monthly salary categories.

The focus was on hiring young foreigners in the same age range & starting pay as local fresh graduates. Critics argued this led to local PMET wage depression. Local PMETs also had indirect cost disadvantages such as National Service reservist training & maternity leave.
Local PMETs were also rejected when they were deemed overqualified. PMET employment became a foreigner-1st situation.
After the mass foreign PMET influx started, some older PMETs lamented the loss of an earlier cordial working environment. This influx created a negative workplace atmosphere.
Hiring immigrant cheaper PMETs was easier to understand. However, since immigrant PMETs might not be cheaper & there was no consensus that they were better, why were large numbers of immigrants hired for middle & high-paying conventional PMET positions?
The only plausible reason was that PAP government’s earlier track record meant senior local PMETs trusted the PAP. They hired foreigners for PMET positions because they were encouraged to do so by the ESM.
Their good career advancements meant that while they might be aware of workplace tensions, they believed the economy was generating good jobs for everyone.
The mainstream media tried to persuade existing locals to accept the newer immigrants by featuring some success stories. However, these features showed the circular reasoning behind the ESM FT policy. A reason for immigrant PMET success was that employing organizations gave them advancement & development opportunities.
Local displaced PMETs could improve themselves but they would be fighting a losing battle as they were in no position to go against the PAP Government.
From 1997 to 2011, the PAP Government rejected any reduction in new PQS holders. The mainstream media portrayed the critics as isolationist xenophobes.
Singapore was not alone in bringing in immigrant PMETs. However, no country or region in history had
  • brought in such a huge number of potential long-term residents from diverse origins in such a short time &
  • expected full-scale social, economic & political integration into the mainstream within an even shorter time.
Integration of individual voluntary immigrants into their settled areas was always a long & gradual process.
The ESM foreigner 1st policy also influenced the immigrant PMET mindset. Increased immigrant numbers led to more communal congregation & less localized integration. Hiring & promoting according to cultural background in the workplace became more common. From around 2002 onwards, a superior mindset towards locals started to develop.
Therefore what happened to the ESM claim that immigrant PMETs were supposed to enhance careers of existing locals?
Many immigrant PMETs brought in by the ESM Foreign Talent policy openly admitted they were only here to earn money for a time period. They cared little about the social situation until the 2011 General Election period.
14 years of marginalization & frustrations led to radicalized critics demanding a reversal of the ESM ultra-liberal & ultra-promotional FT policy.
Some immigrant PMETs responded by becoming more vocal in defending their positions. The superior mindset towards locals came out in the open when some of these PMETs claimed that the immigration PMET influx occurred because home-grown citizens lacked talent.
Promoting Singapore as a global hub by the ESM caused some immigrant PMETs to argue home-grown citizens had no job placement priority. These immigrants had forgotten that Singapore was officially a citizen-based sovereign nation.
Since the ESM FT policy needed local cooperation in order to function, the only viable explanation was that between 1997 & 2011, home-grown citizens & equivalents (earlier naturalized citizens) were very happy to promote the ESM FT policy in their workplaces until they themselves were adversely affected.
When previously immigrant- friendly senior local PMETs were themselves marginalized, they tried to highlight their problems but generally avoided mentioning personal involvement in the foreigner-1st policy.
Former senior local PMETs pointing out FT policy weaknesses after they had become taxi drivers was good for spreading awareness but had little practical value as their successors were still busy bringing in more immigrants for local PMET positions.
Rectifying the ESM FT policy defects depended on decision makers recognizing problems when they were still in charge & not after they had stepped down.

What is the use of the National Conversation when feedback is not utilised to solve problems? Do you see our Local PMETs graduates becomes taxi drivers? Maybe we should import FTs also by inviting US President Obama to run our country as he is “cheaper, better and faster” in solving problems rather than sweeping everything under the carpet by “whitewashing”.

MQ-9 Reaper, the World’s Most Sinister UAV

The typical MQ-9 system is composed of multiple aircraft, ground-control stations, satellites, and flight and maintenance crews. The aircraft is powered by a 950 horsepower turboprop, with a maximum speed of about 260 knots (300 miles per hour or 483 km per hour) and a cruising speed of 150-170 knots (278 to 315 km/hour). With a 66 foot wingspan, and a maximum payload of 3800 lb, the MQ-9 can be armed with a variety of weaponry, including Hellfire missiles and 500-lb laser-guided bomb units. The Reaper has a range of 3,682 miles and an operational altitude of 50,000 ft, which make it especially useful for long-term loitering operations, both for surveillance and support of ground troops.

In 2008, the New York Air National Guard 174th Fighter Wing began the transition from F-16 piloted fighters to MQ-9 Reapers, becoming the first fighter squadron conversion to an all-unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) attack squadron. As of March 2011, the U.S. Air Force was training more pilots for advanced unmanned aerial vehicles than for any other single weapons system.

Weapons:

7 Hardpoints; Up to 1,500 lb (680 kg) on the two inboard weapons stations[64]; Up to 750 lb (340 kg) on the two middle stations[64]; Up to 150 lb (68 kg) on the outboard stations [64]; Center station not used; Up to 14 AGM-114 Hellfire air to ground missiles can be carried or four Hellfire missiles and two 500 lb (230 kg) GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs. The 500 lb (230 kg) GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) can also be carried. Testing is underway to support the operation of the AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missile.

Trading off some of the missiles, the MQ-9 Reaper can carry laser guided bombs, such as the GBU-12. The availability of high performance sensors and large capacity of precision guided weapons enable the new Reaper to operate as an efficient “Hunter-Killer” platform, seeking and engaging targets at high probability of success. It is equipped with an L-3 Communications Tactical Common Datalink (TCDL).

Tests are underway to allow for the addition of the AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missile. Air Force believes that the Predator B will give the service an improved “deadly persistence” capability, with the RPV flying over a combat area night and day waiting for a target to present itself.

In this role an armed RPV neatly complements piloted strike aircraft. A piloted strike aircraft can be used to drop larger quantities of ordnance on a target while a cheaper RPV can be kept in operation almost continuously, with ground controllers working in shifts, carrying a lighter ordnance load to destroy targets.

The Ultimate Wifi for the jetsetter

Snagging international data service usually involves either special agreements or steep roaming costs. Not Uros and its new Goodspeed hotspot. The pocketable, 21Mbps HSPA+ router carries a staggering 10 SIM cards and simply uses a local SIM for whichever destination country you visit. The brute force strategy helps Uros offer a relatively low flat rate for 1GB of data per day, no matter where you are on the coverage map: while the Goodspeed itself costs €273 ($352), Uros asks just €5.90 ($8) a day for occasional visits and €9.90 ($13) a month for frequent fliers. It’s a very sizable bargain for the jetset, even with a current scope limited to Finland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. A number of “important” countries are due before Christmas, which could make Uros’ hotspot a go-to choice for those who just can’t stay settled in one place.

Foreigner influx increased instead of being curtained!

September 15th, 2012
Joshua Chiang, the former Chief Editor of theonlinecitizen alerted me to the following population data:-
PRs and new citizens dropped
Between 2008 and 2011, the number of permanent residents (PRs) granted plummeted by about 65%, from 79,167 to 27,521.
The number of new citizens granted dropped by 23% over the same period, from 20,513 to 15,777.
Overall drop or increase?
So, does the above mean that the consistent rhetoric in recent years that the influx of foreigners will be curtailed, has been met?
Well, I think to answer this question may need closer examination of the population statistics.
Does granting less PRs mean that the influx of foreigners is being curtailed? Maybe not, because most of the PRs granted may already be in Singapore as foreigners. So, it may just mean that their status remain as foreigners instead of PRs.
Similarly, does granting less new citizens mean curtailing as well? Again, maybe not, because most of the new citizens may already be in Singapore as PRs.
What is perhaps more significant to answer the question, may be the overall growth in foreigners’ statistics.
6 months increase 74,000 vs 12 months 80,400?
According to the analysis in the TR Emeritus Editorial “Foreign population continues to increase unabatedly after GE 2011” (Aug 21), for the six months from June 2011 to December 2011, the number of foreigners and PRs increased from 1.926 to 2.0 million. This is an increase of 74,000.
In contrast, the increase was 80,400 for the 12 months, from June 2010 to June 2011.
Rate of change of growth up 83%?
Therefore, the rate of change of growth in foreigners has actually increased by 83% (73,600 increase in 6 months compared to 80,400 increase in 12 months) on an annualised basis at the current rate of growth.
So, the answer to the original question as to whether the influx of foreigners is being curtailed, is NO!
In fact, it may be growing even faster!
Letting in more foreigners whilst granting less PRs and new citizens does not escape the fact that we are still letting in much more foreigners than before!

Samsung pays Apple $1 Billion sending 30 trucks full of 5 cent coins

September 6, 2012 8:17 pm
This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.
The funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best.
This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins.
Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it.
You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law. A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week. There is only one way to sum this story up CLASSIC!

The film that sparks outrage "Innocence of Muslims"

Google has rejected the White House’s request to “review” the suitability of the anti-Muslim film that has sparked anti-American protests throughout the Arab world in what may have been a late attempt to defuse controversy.
Google said it is further restricting the access to the clip on YouTube instead to comply with local laws.
“We’ve restricted access to it in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt, given the very sensitive situations in these two countries,” the company said. “This approach is entirely consistent with principles we first laid out in 2007.”
Earlier the Obama administration urged YouTube to “review” the suitability of the anti-Muslim video.
“It is in response to a video, a film, that we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting,” said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.
“That in no way justifies any violent reaction to it, but this is not a case of protest directed at the United States writ large or at US policy. This is in response to a video that is offensive … to Muslims.”
The statement represents a turnaround from the administration as it comes to terms with the scale of protests the film has unleashed.
Just a day earlier, on Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also condemned the video, insisting that it should be allowed to be broadcast in defense of the principle of freedom of expression.
Ironically titled “The Innocence of Muslims,” the 14-minute video, conceived by an American-Egyptian Coptic Christian, has been stated as a reason for attacks on US and other Western embassies and missions in over twenty Muslim countries.
YouTube has not responded to the White House’s request, but had previously refused to take down the video, only selectively blocking access to it in the Middle East.
“This video — which is widely available on the web — is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries,” said an earlier statement from the company, which is owned by Google. YouTube later added other countries with large Muslim populations to the blocked list.
The low-budget production, which sat on YouTube for months with only a handful of views, mocks Islam and presents the prophet Mohammed as a pedophile. Various uploads of the film following its dub to Arabic and broadcast on Egyptian television have generated several million views.
Some countries, such as India and Pakistan, took proactive steps and requested that YouTube block the video.
Afghanistan has stopped access to YouTube in its entirety until the video portal removes “The Innocence of Muslims.”
The film was initially uploaded in July, but did not cause controversy until it was dissected on conservative Egyptian programs earlier this month.
WARNING : The film’s portrayal of Prophet Mohammed is out of context and is deemed defamation and I as a Christian do not agree, if you are offended by it, please then refrain from watching. – Contributed by Oogle.

Saturday, Sep 15, 2012

LOS ANGELES – The inflammatory anti-Islam film that has triggered rioting across the Muslim world was produced by a US religious group called Media for Christ and reportedly directed by a pornographer.
The man apparently behind the film – entitled “Innocence of Muslims” on its 14-minute YouTube trailer – is a US-based Egyptian Copt and fraudster who may have violated his parole, US officials said Friday.

The film was directed by 65-year-old Alan Roberts, a veteran whose prior oeuvre was dominated by schlock soft porn and hammy action with titles like “Young Lady Chatterley II” and “Karate Cop,” according to website Gawker.
Gawker interviewed members of the cast of “Innocence of Muslims,” who say they were duped into appearing in what they thought was a fictional epic, only to discover their lines had been dubbed over with anti-Muslim propaganda.
Roberts’s casting call lists the leading roles as George, Condalisa and Hillary, but in the finished version, the script was doctored to make them represent the Prophet Mohammed and figures from the Quran.
The film was promoted by a network of right-wing Coptic and Evangelical Christians with a radical anti-Muslim agenda, like Egyptian American provocateur Morris Sadek and Terry Jones, a Florida pastor notorious for publicly burning a Quran.
And, acting as “consultant,” was Steve Klein, a Vietnam veteran and founder of Courageous Christians United who is notorious for protests outside mosques and Mormon temples and who told AFP he helped the moviemakers.
The film itself does not appear to have broken any US laws, but Nakoula Bassily Nakoula, the 55-year-old Egyptian Copt believed to have written the film, may have breached the rules governing his conditional release from prison.
“The matter is under review,” said a spokesman for the Administrative Office of the US Courts.
Early Saturday, Nakoula was taken for questioning to a police station, local television reported.
The local NBC News affiliate said Nakoula was escorted by sheriff’s deputies from his Cerritos, California, home shortly after midnight for an interview by federal probation officers.
A 2009 indictment from a US District Court in California shows that Nakoula was charged with defrauding US banks by opening false accounts and passing bad checks.
He has since been released on probation, and the document says he agreed to testify against the alleged ringleader in the check scam, but if Nakoula is now found to have broken the terms of his parole, he could go back to jail.
As part of his release terms, he was forbidden from using computers or the Internet for five years and fined US$790,000 (S$963,721).
This week saw Nakoula move from anonymous petty criminal to become a central figure in an international incident that has triggered mass protests in Muslim-majority countries in North Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and seen several US diplomatic missions attacked.
Reporters and police are camped out outside Nakoula’s house in Cerrito outside Los Angeles, but he has not been seen, although he did give an interview to Radio Sawa, a US-government station that broadcasts in Arabic.
Nobody manipulated my film
“I am the one who leaked the 14 minutes and put it on the Internet and I am thinking about releasing the full film. Nobody manipulated my film,” he said.
The clip on YouTube was picked up by Egyptian television.
The film has amateurish production values, with actors in laughable false beards appearing to hover weightlessly in front of stock desert footage.
But its depiction of the Prophet Mohammed as a thuggish deviant offended many Muslims, and sparked a wave of anti-American protests that have cost several lives and seen mobs burn US missions, schools and businesses.
According to Paul Audley, president of Film LA, which issues filming permits in Los Angeles, a group called Media for Christ was issued a one-day shooting license in August 2011 for a film with the working title “Desert Warriors.”
“I do know personally for having looked at it, before it was withdrawn, that the producer’s name on it is Sam Bossil,” he said in an interview. Bossil is believed to be one of the pseudonyms used by Nakoula, who uploaded the clip as “Sam Bacile.”
A man identifying himself as Sam Bacile gave interviews to US media this week in which he claimed to be an Israeli-American Jew who made the film to help Israel, but a consultant on the movie has since debunked this claim.
Media for Christ’s websites and Facebook page were taken down without explanation Friday, but the group is reportedly a right-wing conservative operation founded by Joseph Nasralla Abdelmasih, an Egyptian Copt.
“Media For Christ is a place to discover the word of God and the Gospel preached by many different ministries and ministers in the Lord,” the brief introduction to the otherwise defunct website reads.
The group is based just outside Los Angeles in the city of Duarte, where city manager Karen Herrera confirmed it holds an active business permit.
